SQL Server 2008 Failed to install in a Windows 2008 Cluster

  • Dear All,

I have an issue with an installation of a second instance of SQL 2008 on Server 2008R2 cluster.

Here is my setup. I have a three nodes Windows Server 20088R2. There is a default instace of SQL Server 2008.

I have created 5 more LUNs to cater for the new SQL instance. Also, I have created a new MSDTC object, and CNO on the DNS server.

I started the SQL Server New cluster Installation and at the last stage failed. On the Installation progress page it reported that Database Engine Services, SQL Server Replication, and Full text search Failed.

What do I do now? Do I delete these objects from the cluster and start again? Is there something you can suggest?

    Thank you very much.

  • have you checked the install log for details of what failed

  • Hello Perry,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I have checked it and it reports that User Has Cancelled the Install. I had to cancel it because on the last screenof the SQL Server installation the Finish button was greyed out, so I had to close the page.

Do you want to see the log file?

    Regards,

  • what install option did you select from the SQL Server 2008 installation center screen?

  • Perry,

I have selected New SQL Server failover cluster installation.

As I said in my previous post it all went fine up to the point Installation Progress page. I got the following message:

The cluster resource SQL Server (SQL_Name_Instance) could not be brought online. Error: The resource failed to come online due to the failure of one or more provider resources. (Exception from:HRESULT:0x80071736).

So, I discarded the message, and it took me to the Instal Progress page.

    Thank you

  • Hello SSCrazy,

Apologies for the late reply. I was away for few days.

I am installing with the SP1 integrated. I am aware that running the SQL 2008 installer generates errors, but lets you carry on anyway.

To cut it short, I had to rebuild the server, for I have not been able to uninstall SQL Server.

Now, I am stack at the Cluster validation stage, where I get rather weird drive behaviour. I am configuring a second instance of SQL on a three node cluster. The second node (which I had to rebuild), has got all its drives (LUNs on a CLARiiON CX-4) and they are all online. However, under the Failover Cluster mmc the drives from the first SQL instance are all offline. And I think that is why my Cluster validation fails.

    Have I lost you.

All other resources like MSDTC are fine. All settings on the second node are identical as on the other two nodes (Server 2008R2 with SP1, same hardware Dell blades servers, etc).

I am running out of time for I have to have the second SQL instance running next week.

    Thank you very much SSCrazy.
