Existence of SQL Server 2005 and 2008 instance on the same server

  • I have a production system where SQL Server 2005 SP3 has been installed and a named instance running on that server.

Now, Can I install SQL Server 2008 R2 on the same server and create an another named instance?

I want both instances running with their respective versions without impacting each other.

If its possible, will there be any impact on running SQL Server 2005, like SQL Server 2005 Management Studio won't be accessible etc..?

  • You can install both on the same server and they'll operate just fine.

But, that's not saying that they won't impact each other. You will see contention for resources.
