So im trying get an inventory of all the SQL boxs out there and im finding lots of Express edition 2005/2008 out there.
Do you do anything to these boxs. To be honest im not sure what can be done.. (I dont think Express can have SQL Agent service so cant set up Maintenance plans?)

I either use the local Windows scheduler and batch files to call maintenance and backup scripts or schedule SSIS packages on another server with the scripts in SQL Tasks.

I try to get rid of them. If its on a users workstation it may not even be used, it may be part of a previous install and is not doing anything besides presenting a security risk.
If its on a workstation and is being used I will challenge the user and vendor and try to come up with a server based solution.
If its server-based I will try to consolidate onto an existing non-express SQL server.
If I am stuck with an express install I have previously used scripting via the windows scheduler but failures can be frequent and difficult to monitor. I like the idea of a job on another server backing up the express version.
My current pet peeve is vendors who claim their product requires no server and actually contains a express install which 'syncs' with an external source. Their 'client-only', 'low maintenance' product usually becomes a hassle. 🙁

You can do almost anything outside of high availability and if you wanted there are third party tools that may allow you to do that. What is it you want to do with these express editions?
