Hey guys.
I have looked for a script for this for some time - but haven't been able to find EXACTLY what I am looking for, and I am not saavy enough to script it (yet) on my own.
I am trying to script (SQL Server 2005/2008) sql server to backup a large database to multiple files, with database/date tags - based on size.
In other words
IF filesize for 'a' exceeds 4 GB THEN create file 'b'....
This way no matter how big the database grows, the individual backup file size never gets any bigger than setting 'x'.
Any help would be appreciated.

not sure it's possible...you need the backup to complete before you can determine it's size....
That makes me think it cannot be done before the backup is complete...unless it's based on the actual space used for database, and not the reserved space.

Well sp_spaceused will give you a ballpark idea, it should be good enough unless absolute precision is required.
You could always track daily db gowth with the history in msdb and use that to project the next backup size... again it's just a guess, but it should be fairly accurate 99% of the time.
