Installing 2005 STD onto Windows 7 64-bit OS

  • Hi everyone,

I need to install 2005 Client/Management tools onto a laptop which has the Windows 7 *64-bit* operating system.

Are there any issues I should be aware of?

Oh, it has Visual Studio 2008 - should I uninstall that before installing the client tools?

    Thanks much. John

  • Does anyone have any advice?

  • Might watch out for this: http://blog.trivadis.com/b/nicolasmueggler/archive/2008/01/17/installing-sql-server-2005-after-visual-studio-2008.aspx

VS2008 has some SQL components in there to work with SQL Server instances, and those are rev'd after the SQL Server 2005 components.

  • If you're talking about Management Studio and Dev Studio (SSMS and BIDS), you shouldn't have any problem installing those on Win 7 64-bit. I've done that.

If you want to install the SQL engine, I don't think Standard Edition will install on a desktop OS, but I might be thinking of Enterprise Edition. Dev Edition installs on a desktop OS without difficulty. Same for Express.

But I've done the tools (SSMS and BIDS) on plenty of Win 7 64-bit machines. SQL 2005 or 2008.

  • Thanks Gsquared and SteveJones.

    I didn't uninstall anything.

The BIDS and Mgmt Studio installed successfully, although I got several warnings of "Compatibility issues", thruout the install.

    Seems to be OK.

    John
