I need help and I'm ready to pull my hair out. I'm running SQL Server 20008.
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio10.0.4000.0
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools10.0.4000.0
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC)6.1.7600.16385
Microsoft MSXML3.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer8.0.7600.16385
Microsoft .NET Framework2.0.50727.4952
Operating System6.1.7600
I'm receiving a blank screen when I open activity monitor. I can see the graphs which never refresh and the processes, resource waits, data file i/o, and recent expensive queries never populate.
I have run this from my machine and the server. I have run it as myself (sysadmin) with windows authentication and as sa with server authentication. Even though my login has sysadmin privileges, I have explicitly given myself view server state. My refresh rate is 3 seconds. I have logged off and back on multiple times. I have not used the activity monitor since we upgraded to 2008.
Does anyone have any idea why this tool is not populating.
Thanks for any help you can give, Derise

very rarely use activity monitor, but suggest you fire up Perfmon and see if the sql counters are available. Perfmon counters sometimes don't load, or maybe don't get installed somehow, this used to be a frequent subject of forum posts. First check the counters are actually available.

hello experts,
I m experiencing the same issue. I can't see nothing on Monitor activity with sa user. We try with a test user to grant him viewserverstate but it didn't work neither.
What could be the reason ?
Thank you for your help.
Best regards

Thanks for your answer? but I tried and it didnt work. But the issue seems to be more global than an issue SQL server. In fact, I tried to download the couners from Windows Performance Monitor but I couldnt do it.

Hello,
Did anyone ever get a solution to this? I'm experiencing the same problems... Activity Monitor has been working fine and then out of the blue it just stopped working... the graphs show up but they never popular with data. Its a production server so i can't just restart the server.

I'm in the same boat.
Activity Monitor in SSMS comes up... and the graphs at the top start to populate with data, but then they shop.
I never get any rows of data in the Processes Area... nor the Recent Expensive Queries field.
We've got other indicators that waits are piling up, and the server is still recording data, but performance is starting to slide.
But as I said, I can't get Activity Monitor to list any processes. the whole area is blank.
It is a Production box. I'm not going to reboot...... yet....
scary!!!
