No. of Instances for a specific Edition

  • So I see that in my wonderful 70-432 Training Kit it says that Standard, Workgroup, Web, and Express editions can support 16 instances. However, it later says in a question and answer that the only edition that can support installing more than 1 instance of SQL Server on a machine is Enterprise... Can someone clear this up for me?

  • All editions other than Enterprise Edition supports up to 16 instances and Ent Edition supports upto 50 instances. This is on a stand alone Server, on a failover cluster Ent Edition supports 25 instances..

  • All editions support named instances therefore you can have more than one and even mixed editions in your server. I've seen Standard and Enterprise edition named instances sitting pretty on the same server.

  • So basically... The question on page 21 (for anyone using the book) which reads "Which edition of SQL Server supports installing more than one instance of SQL Server on a machine?" and is answered by "Only SQL Server Enterprise supports multiple instances on the same machine." is incorrect.
