  • You should be using WSUS to manage you updates and hotfixes.

If you have to do it manually "without WSUS" then you have to do check the current SP Level and determine if the is a more recent SP. Perform advanced Google the OS and SP, download the exe and extract the files and run the install program.

I don't know if you have WSUS (previously known as SUS) but it makes it a lot easier as to what updates should be applied.

There are some other utilities that you can run to identify what "patches" should be applied.

Be careful when you apply patches for they can break things.

It would be nice if you could ask an Admin who is responsible for Updates if you could look at their SOP.

I did not provide you with much information but if I were you I would start goggling.

  • first of all thank you very much for all the info

we do have automatic updates and patching but for this particular box they only do manual updates.

i do have figured it out the way they do it here.

after all the database, application, and webservices are turned off they way is to go to IE ( 7 in our case) and go to tools and than click on windows update... that will take you there and it will scan the system.. you have a option to do custom or compact and pick and choose if you want to do just critical update.

again thank you very much for your info.
