    1. A local cube resides on a client system, often "built" (extracted might be a better term) using Excel. To an extent, these aren't heavily used. Back in the day (circa SQL 2000 SSAS) there was a utility (paid) that would help you build these, it's probably still around.

    2. No, the SSAS project deploys only to MS SSAS. You can *read* your data from other systems, but not deploy to them. Note - many other BI front end tools can read/consume SSAS cubes.

    3. Depending on the literature you read - a lot or very little. THis is a big topic, but generally, I would consider a cube a datamart, a sub component, front end representation of DW data.

    4. Yes, you can. Should you, or do you want to, i would say "no". If you have a fact and dim tables now, simply create a view that joins the dims to the facts, bring that view in to your data source and use it as the soruce for your cube. This is NOT an optimal solutoon. You can't refresh dims seperately to facts. Partitoning would go away also. It's a bad idea, don't do it 🙂

    5. you prob need to search out some blog entries, look for items from Mosha or Chris Webb.
