In the face of upcoming inevitable advent of the new version of the product, would you suspend your SQL sever 2008 cert prep efforts?
Even if Microsoft goes live with SQL server 2012 anytime next year, I think SQL server 2008 will be used in production for most companies for at least another 3 years (there are still companies running on SQL server 2005) so given the usual validity term of 3 years of Microsoft certs, I think it would be ok to continue studying for SQL server 2008 cert exams.....
What would you say?

I'd say that if you study SQL Server 2008 R2 material it will still be valid for the new certifications (unless you're talking about Training Kits which may become outdated as expected).
I've tested the SQL 2012 beta exams and they're trying to make the test a little more dynamic by adding some questions where you'll need to actually write code. I'm not sure if it's doable in the next version because I think a lot of work is being put into that.
I know it's been mentioned before but I'd say forget the training kits, learn stuff from SQL Server 2008 R2 and then get to know 2012's new features like ColumnStore, AlwaysOn, the new window functions stuff, etc. But most importantly, practice and read a lot.
I'm looking forward to the upcoming certification exams.

I think it wouldn't hurt to have those 2008 certs. It's always nice that people see that you are able to work with multiple versions of the product.

Certification exams for SQL Server 2005 were just retired this year. I would think you would have at least another 3+ years before the 2008 exams get retired. From my understanding your certification is still good after the exams get retired, it's just no one else can sit for that cert. I don't see any reason why you should stop working towards a 2008 certification. I know I haven't.
