SSIS, Importing from Fixed width flat file, Column Marker Editor

  • Hi All,

I really need some help here.

I have a fixed width flat file , having 196 columns, distributed from position 1 to 1300.

I am creating an SSIS package to import this file to SQL Server table.

After creating the flat file connection, I am marking the coulmns, in the ruler.

It looks like, it expects me to mark all the 196 coulmns in 1 go!!!! is it?

I actually marked around 20 columns and then my hand touched the keyboard and some key was pressed ...and the column editor vanished...I had to open it again and start it all over again..because now it wont allow me to create marker....no matter how much I click on the marker.

Anyway I started again from 1st coulmn and this time was in 67th column and the same keypress happened accidentally again its not allowing me to create markers at all!!!

Do I need to start again?? from 1st column.

I also tried to save when I was 20 columns done, it saves but it assumes I am done and doesnt allow to edit or create markers.

Is there a trick , I can save my time, by not having to restart all over again? Or Do I need to mark all 196 coulmns in 1 go ?

If any one has experienced this, please let me know the solution...Thanks!!

  • If you save the flat file connection after marking the first few (or 20) fields, it will just assume that the last field is really long. You can then go back and slice up that last field into the multiple fields it needs to be by just clicking on the ruler to add a dividing line.

But I am not able to Add or Delete the markers , I can move the existing markers though.

I added all the markers/dividing lines and did the mapping etc, then I realized I forgot to add one marker and so lost 1 column in the flat file..I wanted to edit it, add the marker in between..but I cant.

Can it be an issue due to permission or not being and admin ??
