Your Favourite SQL Server Performance Monitoring Tools for Procs, Queries

  • I have been reviewing product feature lists and MDW but I would like to ask members for their opinions for the best off-the-shelf product for monitoring query performance from persisted DMV data.

My main requirement (beyond basic monitoring of key Metrics and Alerts which I believe they all support) is to identify what Procs / Queries were being called during a particular period (frequency, phys &log I-Os, etc...).

As with MDW reports I would like to be able to see Activity for a particular time frame from persisted DMV data kept in a seperate database. Min footprint on Prod Servers is also a very nice to have.

    Thanks

  • In general, if you don't want to purchase a third party product, setting up server side traces and using the, free from Microsoft, RML Utilities.

But, if you want to spend money, I strongly recommend Red Gate's SQL Monitor. It's a great product and it's getting better all the time.
