SQL Agent History MAX Rows is reset to defaults

  • Does anyone know what all can set the SQL Agent History MAX Row values. The defaults are Total = 250000, Rows Per Job = 30000. I've now got at least two servers where we have manually set these to 10000 and 100 respectively, but a few months later they are back up to default. I know on one server we have installed SP3 recently, but it seems strange that adding the service pack would change these settings. As a note, you may want to know that these settings are kept in the registry.

The servers are Windows 2003 SP2 with SQL 2005 SP3.

Nothing in life is ever so complicated that with a little work it can't be made more complicated.

  • I believe the default settings are 1000 and 100 for SQL Agent History so it sounds to me like someone else is upping the values.

  • If these aren't the defaults, then I suspect they may be maximums, particulalry the 250000 value. The strange thing is I have another client and every one of their servers has the same high values.

Since we manage the SQL Servers at both these sites, it would only be one of our DBAs making any changes, and nobody changed the values. It's also very unlikely the change is being applied by either client. It implies this change is comming from somewhere else.

  • The problem has been resolve. There was a SQL Monitoring System patch release that changed the settings.
