Performance benefits of upgrading from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008

  • Hi,

I have a SQL Server 2008 running on Windows 2003(64 bit). What kind of performance benefits will I get if I upgrade the operating system from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008?

I am looking for real benefits in terms of SQL Server performance if we upgrade from Windows 2003(64 bit) to Windows 2008?

    Thanks.

  • Better memory management and Geo Clustering are two improvements that stick out in my mind.

  • If you have 2007-vintage hardware and run Windows 2008 R2 on it then you may find little change in performance.

But if you have 2007-vintage hardware then it is at end of service life and should be replaced. New chipsets support a technology called Second Level Address TRanslation (SLAT) that both Windows 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 R2 can exploit to give up to a 10% performance gain over equivalent hardware without SLAT. You are likely to see other improvements, as new hardware also runs a faster internals bus, memory, etc, so the system will be generally faster.

New hardware is much cheaper per Ghz of computing power. We buy HP blades, and our standard blade with 48GB memory and 2x6-core processors plus the normal ILO and other enterprise stuff cosst us between GBP £5000 and £6000. Getting this performance on 2007 kit would probably cost 10 times as much.
