I really liked this question. Fact is that I never bothered about protocol never knew what exactly the difference.
Was not aware about VIA is a deprecated one as well. Went through the link and now clear. Thank for a wonderful question.

in QotD, "specific hardware" isn't any network card hardware!!! remember the NUMA configuration, that is "specific hardware" or "specific technology"!

A Network Card is not considered specialized hardware 😛
VIA requires very special hardware allowing the server to use kernel bypassing and RDMA in a System Area Network. 😎

It was last time I looked.
But how about local loopback connections (TCIP to 127.0.0.1:1443)? They used to require an adapter (although whether they actually used it depended on whether the platform software provided software loopback or required an adaptor that would perform loopback) but I'm not sure they do today.

In what respect are you claiming that this is less specific than VIA hardware? It's any VIA hardware just as it's any Ethernet adaptor - it certainly isn't "any network card" because you would have one hell of a time trying to run IP over an asynchronous connection on a telephone line (unless you put some sot of virtual interface adaptor software beneath IP - that of course is quite common), or over a non-transparent basic mode synchronous connection, or over a synchronous modem connection that doesn't provide any form of framing, or over a 5-bit telex adaptor, or over a SCSI card.
