January Question: As a DBA, how do you manage your disk space?

,

Managing disk space is an important responsibility of the DBA, and there are many ways to perform this task. In this month’s question, I am asking you, “As a DBA, how do manage your disk space?” In other words: Where do you store your MDF, LDF, and backup files? How do you allocate disk space for your databases and backups? How do you know if you are running low on disk space? What do you do when you run low on disk space? Do you use some form of database or backup compression to save space? You don’t have to provide answers to all these questions, but share with us some useful tips on how you manage your disk space.

Post your responses to the above SQL Server Question of the Month in the comments section below (at www.bradmcgehee.com if you are viewing this from a syndicated newsfeed). And don’t forget to enter your e-mail address when you post your response, so I can contact you if you win.

Because there is no right or wrong answer, this month’s winner will be selected randomly from all the entries that are received.
