has anyone tried installing sql server 2005 standard edition and sql server 2008 r2 express edition in a single pc?

I have this installed on an XP laptop for testing. Since I typically have a bazillion other things open, all of the SQL Server services are set to disabled/manual startup so I can use them only as needed.

I have the developer edition of 2005 and the express edition of 2008r2 running in an XP virtual machine. Both instances run perfectly side by side without problems.
I installed 2005 first, then 2008r2. Both of my instances are named (not default). You can only have one default instance per server, but I typically name mine - especially in a dev environment.
No tricks needed for the install - except to ensure that at least one is a named instance.

i tried to install sql server 2008 r2 express edition(with different instance names) and during installation i am getting an error like "the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

Typically, when you get this message, you can wait 10 seconds and click Connect again and it'll work. Basically, the services are not reporting that they are starting fast enough for SSMS before it gives up.
Or, SQL server services are not starting up. Check your services to ensure they are started properly.
Oh, I just noticed that you get this error while trying to install SQL server. This error at install time is usually a media problem. Try installing from the same file or DVD to another computer, or redownload the failing version one more time. If that doesn't work, you'll need to read the logs in the %Program files%\Microsoft SQL server\100\Setup bootstrap\Log\ folder. Odds are, its just bad media though.
