Can I use SQL Server Management Studio 2008 to work in a database in SQL Server 2005?

  • I have installed SQL SERVER 2008, I use the Management Studio to connect a database that is in SQL Server 2005, it’s correct or recommended this way or is better if I install SQL SERVER 2005? Can I install a database built in 2005 in 2008 and then send this to 2005 again, supposing I will only make changes that are supported for the two versions?

    Best Regards.

  • I've been using SSMS 2008 exclusively in an environment that includes a mix of 2005 and 2008 servers (and one lonely 2000 server that refuses to go away...) for some time now and haven't had any issues so far; it seems to be very backward compatible. You do have to install a separate component if you want to open legacy DTS packages; other than that I haven't encountered any difficulties.

  • Connecting to SQL will be no problem but SSIS will be, unless they have fixed it. SQL 2008 SSMS would not connect to SSIS 2005, and per MS Connect this was by design..
