Upgrading from 2005 to 2008

  • Hi,

We are starting to talk about migrating from 2005 to 2008. The latest version available id 2008R2, right? Do we know what are the plans of Microsoft about getting a new version on the market?

    What is Denali?

    Thanks,

    Hi,

SQL Server 2008 R2 is the latest version released in the market with licence. You can just go the MS Site where you can see the cost and other details of the product.

Denali is SQL Server 2011 version which was released last November 2010.MS has advice not to use Denali for Production, but we can use it in local development.

    Thanks

Actually, "Denali" is the code name for the next version of SQL Server. It is in Microsoft's "Community Technology Preview" state - think of it as an alpha product. It has not been "Released to Manufacturing" (RTM) yet.

Denali (aka SQL 11) is the next major version of SQL. It was announced in November last year, only one CTP has been announced and there is no official name yet (it is NOT currently called SQL Server 2011) and no release date has been announced.

CTPs are licensed for non-production use only unless you are a TAP customer. Since lot of things are broken or half-working, you wouldn't want to put it into production anyway.
