Hi,
I have few questions here, I am planning to setup a environemtnfor one of the client:
Do we need the same size staging environment as we do for production? Typically staging is large and has load balancing, clustering, etc, but it’s not quite as big as prod. various environments we have:
o Integration/Dev
o Staging
o Production
o Disaster Recovery
Good approach to have multiple named instances in the SQL 2005 environment, or just one named instance that all databases share?
The DR environment, will it be same size as production. Is the DR acting as a passive failover for the PROD env?
Thank you.

The correct answer is "It Depends". It depends on your SLA. Especially your DR plan. What kind of hardware, how much data loss is acceptable, how much money are they willing to spend etc.
In our case, we have a development environment with not even half the horse power of our production servers. The QA is decently powered. Our staging is also half the power of production.
The DR is exactly the same server specs as that of production.
Regarding having multiple instances, it has its advantages and disadvantages. Maintenance is higher on multiple instance. But you can fine tune your instances if you plan good.
Just my 2 cents worth.
