Database performance tools criteria/questionaries for vendor?

  • We are in process of looking database performance tools and I like to get you all expert opinion and what types of questions should I be asking vendor who represent their tools. I like to ask set of questions about their product before they come and present us.

    i.e.

    1) What is the architect of their tools?

    2) What is the overhead on monitored SQL intance?

    3) What type of security they use to capture all the monitoring data?

    etc.

  • If it was me I would ask

    1. what is the cost less or high compared other similar tools and what the benifits if it high?

    2. What the benifits tool provide other than native SQL Server?

    3. Is there any Bundle to save like redgate toolbelt?

    4. I'm sorry in first I'm gonna question myself what is my requirement and why I'm spending and how worth it is?

    5. How does the licensing works for example even though you buy sqlmonitor from redgate you can monitor multiple servers but you have to pay for each server you monitor or transfer license from one server to another.

  • I would start Goggling in Advance on some of the tools on the market.

Look at their reviews, compare their features, consider cost, etc

The more informed you are as a consumer the higher the probability that you are going to make a wise decision.

After you have completed your research then you can add to what was already suggested.
