I have 30 SQL 2008 R2 instances. Most are 64-bit, installed on clean Win Server 2008 R2 installations.
Only 1 is like this: SQL 2008 R2 32-bit, upgrade in place over a SQL 2000, on an old 32-bit Windows Server 2003 SP2.
When I try to install SP1 by running the correct 32-bit service pack executable, I see the "extracting files" progress bar, then nothing! Nothing in Windows Application, System, or Security logs, nothing in Setup Bootstrap\Log. The extract completes, briefly displays a command window, then vanishes without a trace. I can't locate the extract folder, which was "d:\b72b....." last time - I'm assuming either it evaporated, or is invisible somehow. No error dialogs.
In the meeting I strenuously objected to the install in place, and to staying with the old server. Unfortunately, "I told you so" would be counterproductive at this point (although I'm enjoying it privately).

Hi
I would suggest login on to the server as the local administrator. Make sure the service accounts has the correct rights. The only place I have seen this before was with an install of another app but it also just bombed out with out any errors. Changing the user to Administrator worked.
Only other possible problem I can think of is that there is a policy that prevents you from installing.

Thanks, Boom.
The service accounts were created and applied during the installation, which was a year ago when I upgraded from SQL 2000 to SQK 2008 R2. SQL Setup provisions the startup accounts when they are specified during the install.
I'm not suspicious of these accounts, because SQL 2008 R2 has been running for a year with no other issues, and also because the installation never really progresses past the file extraction progress bar, which appears to complete and then vanishes.
I am running as my administrative account, which has local admin rights to all database servers in the organization.

I have extracted the SP1 setup file to a folder by running SQLServer2008R2SP1-KB2528583-x86-ENU.exe -extract. Now I can go direct to setup.exe and run it.
I see a command window blink, then nothing.
If I run a command window, point to the folder where the bits were extracted, and type "setup" <CR>, it responds with
Microsoft (R) SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup 10.50.2500.00
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
... and then nothing. Done. Same result if I add either "-?" or "/?".

hi
Where i had this problem I also had admin rights on the server but only if I logged on as local administrator it let me install.
In my case it was an installation of Lync on a server. When I logged in as a domain controller with local admin rights it had the exact same symptoms that you are describing. I then logged of and logged in as administrator and the install worked fine. This leads me to belief that the Administrator had some rights the administrator group did not. Maybe this is also affecting you and that is why I suggested policy as this OS is diff to all the others.
Did you try a diff SP1 install? Just a shot in the dark.

Thanks. I have tried running as SERVERNAME\Administrator, and the results are the same.

I'm having the same problem, except on a cluster where 1 node works flawlessly for installing SP1 and the other node is touch and go. I ran it three or four times (with and without admin) and nothing worked and all of a sudden ran it and it worked. As the others, nothing in the logs. This is scary :w00t:
