Best Practice Upgrading SQL 2005 to SQL 2008

  • I have been tasked to migrate our SQL databases from 2005 to 2008. I searched and couldnt find anything with the basic steps. I start my testing next week in our test enviroment. But was looking for a few pointers when I start. I ran the upgrade advisor already and am working on those notes. This is the first time I have been tasked with a project like this on my own. Any steps or pointers would be great. I know its not as simple as putting the disk in.

  • First, go to the Microsoft and get the 2008 Upgrade Advisor. Run it against your 2005 database. If there are any major issues, it will identify them. Otherwise, it's an upgrade. Side-by-side upgrades are the safest. Do lots of testing. That's it.

  • Make sure you have backups, test lots as Grant noted (run your application against an upgraded database ), and follow the Upgrade Advisor.
