Possible external reporting solutions

  • Greetings every one 😀

I apologize if this is in the wrong category but I felt reporting services was not necessarily the proper topic for this :).

So here is my situation; We have reporting services and data cubes set up for internal use. We send some of these reporting services reports on a weekly basis to our sales reps. Additionally we use a 3rd party online reporting service for our sales reps to use in order to do ad hoc reporting. We FTP the 3rd party solution on a daily basis.

There are 2 major issues. 1) the cost of said 3rd party solution is more than we are willing to spend, and we feel, a bit much for our smaller organization and the amount of people we have. 2) Many people complain that the online solution is very difficult to use, not very userfriendly, and just generally problematic.

One of the benefits of the online solution is its security. Our reps can see their own data, but not others data. While I would like to give everyone the ability to use the data cubes, there does not seem to be a way to isolate each reps data by security short of designing an inordinate amount of cubes.

So to my question, what are viable solutions in this scenario? I know Reporting Services is not intended as an ad hoc solution, and the data cubes can't be (as far as I know) filtered by securities. I am assuming there is an alternative method short of paying a 3rd party vendor a gigantic fee, especially for a company of roughly 400 employees.

Any help is appreciated thank you 😀
