Hi, all.
I downloaded and installed Visual Studio Lightswitch 2011 to my PC, which runs on 64-bit Windows 7 HP. The following were installed with Lightswitch:
1. Microsoft SQL Server 2008
a. Configuration Tools
i. SQL Server Installation Center 64-bit
2. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
a. Import & Export Data 64-bit
b. Configuration Tools
i. SQL Server Configuration Manager
ii. Error and Usage Reporting
iii. SQL Server Installation center 64-bit
One of the sample apps has a script to attach a database to SQL.
However, when I open an elevated command prompt window and type in "sqlcmd -S .\SQLExpress -i attachContoso.sql", as instructed, I get this error:
"HResult 0x2, Level 16, State 1
Named pipes provider: Could open a connection to SQL Server [2].
sqlcmd Error Microsoft SQL server Native Client 10.0: A network related or instance specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. server is not found or is inaccessible.
sqlcmd Error Microsoft SQL server Native Client 10.0: Login timeout expired.
I do not know how to use the installed SQL tools as I am only familiar with Management Studio and Query Analyzer in older versions.
Q1. How can I use the above tools to solve my problem?
I downloaded Management Studio Express 2008 but its installation just takes me round in circles. A warning message advised installing Sp1 after installing MSE so i also downloaded it.
Q2. How can I go about a straightforward install of MSE?
Q2.

I read this post and decided to follow the steps, so I uninstalled ALL SS2008 components from Control Panel but a few proved stubborn, so I googled for an advanced uninstall and followed the advice given on this one. Foolishly, I may add.
Now I am cannot install MSE2008 or anything else for that matter - the installer simply hangs with a lot of .NET unhandled exceptions which I am certain are affecting other software on my computer.
I need to manually get rid of every SQL trace so that I can do a full install at lesiure with MSE.
Any help will be appreciated.

You stated that the installation of the Management Studio Express takes you around in circles.
What happened after you installed SP1?

I don't quite remember; I think I never got round to installing SP1, as it was supposed to be AFTER MSE.
But MSE screwed me up, and now I've screwed up pretty much everything SQL on my machine.
Short of a full format, it will be a miracle to be able to install SS2008+SP1+MSE.
I am waiting and hoping for that miracle.

I would be interested is seeing your errors.
Why don't you uninstall?
You should not have to reformat. Worst case scenario perform a manual uninstall.

Ok, below is the full text of the first error/s to pop up:
Unhandled exception occurred in your application.
If you click ‘Continue’, the application will ignore the error and attempt to continue.
If you click ‘Quit’, the application will close immediately.
An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for userSettings/Microsoft SqlServer Configuration LandingPage.Properties.Settings: Could not load file or assembly ‘System: Version = 4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKey Token=b77a5c561934e089’ or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified (C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Microsoft_Corporation\LandingPage.exe_StrongName_nyspccglaxml4nhlj5z3thycltsvyx\10.0.0.0\user.config line.
I clicked 'Continue' a couple times and the install proceeded, I opted to install DB Engine Services only at first. I accepted all the default settings, and ended up with this error: Master database already exists on MSSQL10.SQLEXPRESS...
The next time, I checked everything thoroughly and found a warning about Windows Firewall being a potential obstacle.
I checked under Windows Firewall and found that MSSQL Server was among the 'allowed' programs, but I still went ahead and disabled the firewall temporarily. When I came to the install folders screen, I noticed the warnings about the existence of Master, Temp and the other system databases in MSSQLSERVER.SQLEXPRESS, so i changed the folder to MSSQL10EXPRESS.SQLEXPRESS instead and the errors disappeared.
But at the end, i got an error message about a particular registry entry missing and was advised that the DBE install failed and to install SQL Setup Support files.
I found SQL Set Support Files under the Repair option, and ran it and re-ran the install OK until at the end, I get the error message 'External component threw an exception.' and the installation failed.
The Setup Discovery Report found no instance of a server.
Control Panel found SQL Server 2008 Browser, Native Client and Setup Support Files.
Will I have to uninstall these?

I would start out with a clean install.
You may want to try to install on a Home PC if you have not already done so.
I really don't care for Express.
Have you ever considered the Developer Edition?
You can purchase for under $50 USD.

Yes, Welsh, I need to do a clean install, and for the moment it has to be Express.
But I am already doing this on my home laptop, don't have any other computer, that is why I need to clear up all errors and uninstall fully and manually.

I need all the help I can get to:
1. Remove all traces of any existing SQL Server instances, installs, setup files, etc.
2. Repair or restore my registry to where it was before I messed it up yesterday.
3. Do a new clean install of SS2008+SP1+MSE.
As things stand, the only other option I have is to format the computer, which is a real PITA. If anyone can make sense of the error message (exception) and guide me to resolve it, I shall be grateful.
