hi,
Trying to set up some Alias's but so far no joy.
After i create one, I can only get a connection via SQLCMD from the local machine that it was created on. And even then when i tried on a clustered named instance.. it didnt work even from the local machine, getting a error message of timing out.
I set up the alias in SSCM for both 64 and 32bit (the system is 64bit so not sure if this is needed)

Update
So i can a connection via a ALIAS if i:
Create the ALIAS on my local machine not the machine that i want to connect to. And for a named instance you need to specifiy the dynamic/static port its on!
I dont really see the point in creating an Alias if you cant create one on the server for all machines that connect to it! Am i doing it wrong? Am i missing something!
Thanks

Nope, server aliases are a shortcut for local connections, not a way to rename the server.
