Changing the Name of a Data Source - Will it wipe out the User/Password?

  • I need to make a change to a data source name on our production reporting server. Typically our DBA manages all data sources on production because they connect "using credentials stored securely in the report server", and he's the only one who knows the passwords to the reporting accounts. I know modifying the connection string will automatically require you to reenter the password if you want to save the change, as will making other similar changes. From my initial testing, it doesn't seem a name change requires you to reenter the password to save it, but I'm a little hesitant to make the change without confirmation that the reports will still work after I do so. I would just have the DBA do it, but that will take over a week just to remove two characters from the name.

I'm sure the proper answer is "follow the process, let the DBA make the change", but if I can't wait that long for a simple change, is it going to break anything? Anyone know for sure? I can't find anything on MSDN.

    Thanks much!

  • I figured this out, name changes don't require you to re-enter the password.
