Hello All! I have just downloaded SP1 for SQL Server 2008R2 and saw that there are two downloads. One looks like the normal Service Pack download but there is a second one for SSMS. I looked around and could not find anything saying why this is there or if both would need to be applied. I do not have my 64-bit PC yet, so I have no way of testing this. Does anyone know anything about this or why this is this way? Maybe shed some light on this issue?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi,
If you have SSMS installed on the system, SQLServer2008R2SP1-KB2528583 will also update it, you do not need to install SSMS again.

Thanks! Which leads me to anther question - do both need to be applied on a system that has SSMS and SQL Server 2008R2 installed or would just the normal service pack be enough?

Just the normal service pack need to be applied.

Thanks. One more question - The service pack for SSMS - is that to be used just for client updates? That would be an end user who only has the SQL Server2008R8 Client tools.
Thanks,

It is not actually a service pack for Management Studio, but full installation of Management Studio with service pack applied.
That is there because, if you do not have installed Management Studio,
1. you need to install it from R2 Media and then,
2. Apply SP1 on top of it.,
OR
you can install Management Studio which has SP1 applied directly using "The service pack for SSMS" download.
SQLServer2008R2SP1-KB2528583 also updates client tools.

I just did my sp1 install also, and saw those two packages. I only run the management studio from the server. Do I need to run this on the server for the management studio. I read the above thread but was not sure, so I appreciate your patience if you have already answered this.
Thank you

Here is my understanding -
If you already have Management Studio installed, apply the normal Service Pack to it. If you do not have it installed and that is ALL you want installed, use the Service Pack for Management Studio, as it will perform the install and apply the service pack together.
