We have a SQL Server at work that has never had any updates/Patches applied since it was installed. I have recently been on a SQL 2008 course and don't really know to much about SQL so I could do with some help please. We are looking at rolling out Sharepoint 2010 to link in with the SQL server . We have some databases linked to the SQL 2008 but I don't really know the best ways of going about updating the server as I am concerned about the databases.
Is it a case of just downloading and installing the patches or is it more complex with the databases been connected to the Server?
Sorry for sounding thick but any help here would be a great help. I just don't want to mess something up that may cause problems with the databases.

Don't sweat it too much, do a little reading and you'll be fine. The most recent Service Pack is SP2 for SQL Server 2008. There are additional Cumlative Updates (CU), but don't worry about those unless you're having the specific problem they address.
You'll have downtime during the patching while the server restarts, but it's pretty straight forward. Schedule it after business hours and you'll be good. The patch won't change the compatability level of the databases, so there shouldn't be any application impact aside from the short outage.

For sharepoint 2010 environment your sql server 2008 should be SP1 with CU2 at a minimum. SP2 is the best choise.
It is a case of just downloading and installing the patches, but first make good backups.
