I never had problem with DTA before... it seemingly started out of nowhere.
When I start a new session at the "Submitting Configuration Information" step I get a crash popup saying:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name:APPCRASH

I tried with multiple different trace files, including some that were used for successful sessions previously. I also tried flushing all the DTA_% tables in msdb just in case some orphans got in there or something. I also tried running DTA as administrator with no luck.
I tried different settings like 'keep all existing PDS' or 'do not keep any existing pds', and changed the maximum disk space or execution time for the analysis... Can't get this crash to go away!
Has anybody ever experienced this or have any suggestions?
Thanks

this pop up offers you 2 choices, to look online for info on the bug... .which leads nowhere, or to 'close the program'. If you click on that the popup goes away but the program doesn't close... it continues the analysis for a while... then eventually terminates saying "Tuning process exited unexpectedly"...

Looks like the problem was with my trace definition. I was tracing more then what is required by DTA. Now I split my trace into one dedicated for DTA and another one for the other things I was tracing... Now it works.
The strange thing is that I was using this same trace template for a while and never ran into this problem before.
Moral of the story... Careful with what you feed DTA!
