SQL 2008 r2 Instance

  • I'm running 3 instances on my local. SQL 2005/2008 R2 & Denali. My databases are in SQL 2005 but I just installed Enterprice 2008 R2 and want to take advantage of all the R2 enhancements. When I log on into my local instance it continues to log into the sql 2005 instance which is version 9.0, when I really want to log into the R2 service pack 1 instance which is version 10.5. Can anyone provide me information on how to either switch instances of what I log into or if there is a way that I can migrate the existing verion 9.0 instance to a version 10.5 instance. Thanks in advance.

  • How/what did you name your instances...?

For example the default is MSSQLSERVER (i think!) - I named my instances after the version, so MSSQL2008R2, MSSQLDENALI, etc

Then in SSMS when choosing your connection - you specify the instance name like \\servername\instancename

    gsc_dba

  • Thanks for your reply, I figured out what the issue was. It has more to do with the admin rights that are here at my job which are f****d up to begin with, but I just had to reinstall R2 as my user name and not under the local system when setting up the server configuration, but they instance name I am using is MSSQLSERVERR2 because MSSQLSERVER (default) is already set for the SQL 2005 version. Thanks for your help though 🙂
