For our Disaster Recovery site we have a Win2008R2/SQL2008R2 Active/passive install for disaster recovery purposes.
My question is:
With a Win2008R2/SQL2008R2 Active Passive cluster is it OK to install SQL 2008 NOT R2 as an instance on that cluster? Or, is it not a good idea to intermix SQL 2008 with an SQL 2008 R2 install?
The reason for this is we have a Non R2 SQL 2008 here and for disaster recovery I have been asked if I can put a NonR2 install on the other side of the cluster to save hardware costs.
I am a little hesitant to do this even for a disaster recovery system.
Thoughts?

2008 and 2008 R2 may reside on the same hardware

Usually with mixed versions you put the lower version on first. I must admit I'd be reluctant to adopt this even though I believe it can be done. I must admit that a clustered DR is taking DR seriously!!

Well. Here is our situation.
One system is a Win2008R2\SQL 2008 active/passive cluster here, no disaster hardware.
A new system is a Win2008R2\SQL 2008 R2 active/passive cluster here, non prod in our disaster site and it is a active/passive cluster. The reason for the non-prod cluster is so we can test out Windows and SQL patches on a cluster non-prod before we go for production since this is a store facing application that touches 1,400+ stores 20X7. If we had a disaster this cluster would be production. I would simply restore the databases and the application and everything would be already configured and away we'd go.
I was posed with the question of since we don't have hardware in our disaster site for the first system listed could we leverage the cluster hardware already there for this. I am a little hesitant to install a down version after I have already installed R2 as well.
