I attended my first SQL Saturday this past weekend. I wasn't sure if there would be enough of interest for someone in my position and level. I've been working with SQL databases for almost 10 years but am not a DBA, Architect, or Developer.
I had to get up 2 hours earlier than usual (I am NOT a morning person) and on a Saturday besides and it was 4 hours round trip. So when I say that it was well worth attending, it truly was. I thank the organizers, speakers, sponsors and fellow attendees for making this such a great event.

Glad you enjoyed it. Which one did you attend?

#50 in Iowa City.
My favorite session was given by Alexander Kuznetsov on Defensive Programming. He had simple, understandable examples, was well-paced to give the audience time to absorb what he was saying, and was thought provoking. I also think I learned more about giving presentations by his fine example.

Good to hear it. Alex wrote a great book, and you can grab a copy from our site (books to the left).
I wanted to go, but with SQLSaturday #52 next weekend and #53 the week after, that's a bit too much travel for me.

I actually "won" one of the free copies given away at the session. Woohoooo!:-D

Glad to hear these things are appreciated. The people who put them on and the speakers put a lot work into them.
Did you meet people too?

I have been to one of these, and I would do another in a heartbeat. Like you I had to wake up very early, and travel far, but the quality of the presentations made it all worth while.

Love to hear when people enjoyed a SQLSaturday. I've yet to be at one that I didn't have a great time at and I've attended 7 with 2 more coming in the next month. I hope to meet you at one in the future.
If you will be at the Summit be sure to look for me.

No, I didn't do much networking, but I plan to work on that next time.
I'd love to attend the summit, but it's definitely not in the budget this time. Our department has been requested to CUT a substantial amount and many of us in higher education don't have much "bloat" in our budget to begin with. Fortunately, my boss does value professional development. So it's still possible in the future.

Have you heard of the PASS SQLRally? It may be something that your boss may be willing to do or help with.

Next spring is still the same budget year for us. We were lucky to get back what they cut from our compensation last year. I'd love to meet some of the people I've come to admire, respect and appreciate on SQL Server Central. I'm still plan to have that opportunity in my future.

There was one in Chicago last April, http://sqlsaturday.com/31/eventhome.aspx. I wasn't leaving FL for Chicago in April though.:-D

I would bet there will be something in the Chicago area, or nearby, in the next year.
