I am trying to learn failover clustering.
As I don't have access to real time labs or systems, I am trying to use Virtual PC and download
some shared storage simulators to get a real time failover clustering experience.
I used VMWare player but I am not able to configure Windows Server 2008 R2 as my system does not
support 64 Bit. Please suggest alternative solution for this so that I could get hands on experience on
failover clustering.

Also, as I don't have the Windows server 2008 or earlier version software, I am trying to download the
evaluation edition from Microsoft website

Firstly dont use VirtualPC or Player. Use either Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 or VMWare Server 2.0.x
Check my guide at this link for step by step details using VMWare Server 2
This guide is for SQL Server 2005

try them again, they do take a while to download as they are around 4MB each

Perry,
I was referring your PDF for 2008 and in page 6 related to VMWare βManage Virtual Networksβ option, I am unable to click on 'OK' button after performing the actions you described as it appears to be in disabled status only.
Could you please assist me on that. Is there anyway I could click on 'OK' button.
Also, in your PDF, I can see 'APPLY' button, but on my screen, I don't see it. Is it because I am unable to add my domain account to __vmware__ local group.
My OS is Windows 7 Home and I am unable to do it.
Please advise.

On Windows 7 home, I am unable to see the local user management option from console. I get this error message.
"This computer is running windows 7 home premium. This snapin may not be used with this version of windows. To manage user account for this computer, use the User accounts tool in the control panel."
I guess only cmd line commands would work. If we have to add my domain account to the local group on __vmware__ on my PC, what would be the command I need to use.
Eg.
NET USER /ADD username
NET LOCALGROUP administrators /ADD username
What would be for VMware, please help.

Check the VMWare Server user's guide for details of supported host OS's. I have successfully used Windows XP Pro SP2, however I dont think Windows 7 is supported and certainly not Home edition!

Is there anyway we could try clustering on a windows 7 machine just for learning purpose.
Please advise.

You need an OS with Cluster support, Server 2003 or 2008 would be best to test.

Mohammed's current issue is regarding the virtual machine host OS not the cluster node OS! Mohammed is using Windows 2008 R2 as the cluster node OS!

Use the Windows 2008 R2 OS for your host machine, VMWare Server should install and run on this OS (I have used this previously without issue)!

Obviously if using the Windows 2008 Eval edition you will have to rebuild the system inc the host, every 180 days!!
