How to uninstall SQLServer2008R2

  • I need to uninstall a default instance SQL SERVER 2008R2 Standard Edition 64 bit. this is the only instance on that server.

I have tried to uninstall from control panel and I have done the uninstallation successfully. But, i still see the MSSQLSERVER folder in program files. Also, I found many blogs that talks about Registery keys which has to be deleted.. but none of them are obvious.

Can you please suggest what are the steps to follow to uninstall the server completely and successfully. can I delete the MSSQLSERVER folder in the program files.

    Thanks,

    Swetha K

  • After uninstalling SQL Server successfully, MSSQLSERVER folder remains in the Program Files folder.

This is normal. You can delete it.

  • Should we have to work on deleting the Registry entries while removing the default instance.

  • If you deleted it successfully via add\remove programs there is nothing further to do in the registry.

If you are planning to reinstall you may find you have to reboot the server first.
