Should i upgrade to latest SP?

  • Hi,

Ive just taken over the care of a few servers with sql server 2005 on. 2 being in a cluster than is running some important DBs and another that is a virtual machine that is holding all our email archive.

All the SQL Server 2005 installs are still on the default install.. No SP no CU have ever been put on.

Ive found a problem getting the Full Text service wont start. THis is apprently fixed in SP2 so i found.

As far as i know all the servers are running ok.. The memory is high on the cluster but im not sure its a problem.

    So..

do you suggest upgrading to the latest sp?

    Thanks

  • yes you should keep all your servers up to date with the latest SPs as a matter of best pratice

  • Absolutely. You should test each SP prior to putting it on your production system and that should take a week or two, just to be sure, but then, yes, you should upgrade them.

Having gone through the Slammer attack, that's the one thing I can tell you, keep your SPs up to date on your servers. I'd even keep up with the cumulative updates if they were my servers.

  • Only problem i have with that is..

    we have no test/dev server..

we have live sql server and that is all :/

I could create a vm with 2005 on it and move the dbs on but im not sure how i could test things sccm and sharepoint dbs.

    Thanks for the input.
