I never worked with SSRS at all. My Boss wants me to setup SSRS on my local machine so that he could train and have me work on some reports. How can I get it set up and once after setup how can I connect it to our server.

Just run the SQL Server install process and Pick SSRS in the options to install. You might as well include SSAS / SSIS while you're at it.
At some point you'll have 3 options. Don't configure SSRS, configure for reporting (choose this) or configure for Sharepoint.
In theory that's enough to get you started. The rest is just learning the product.
You can't connect this server to the prod environement. You need to deploy the reports to the real server once that is setup (unless your machine becomes a real server, which I wouldn't recommend). Once you're setup you just need to right-click on the report and hit deploy and everything is taken care of for you.
