64K Offset

  • Does the 64K offset need to be the actual first 64K of a disk, or can it be 128 or 256, or anything 64 goes into evenly? When data is on a second primary partition cant use the 64.

    Thanks

  • Are you talking about disk partition alignment?

I don't believe this will work. I think all disks need to be aligned. If they are not, you have to backup all data on the partition and then re-format it to re-align it.

The main information about this is here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd758814%28v=sql.100%29.aspx

  • disk alignment.

just wondered if had to be the actual 64K starting or if it could be evenly divisible.

  • evenly divisible is fine - although if you are on a SAN you need to take raid group striping sizes into account. Win2008+ now aligns on 1024K (at least for partitions > 4GB).
