Hello, I have been trying to learn SQL and Oracle. I am very comfortable with MS Access. However I am told that SQL and Oracle are far more convenient to work with than MS Access once I get the hang of it.
I need some advice on which are the most user-friendly (meaning easiest to learn and apply) versions of Oracle and SQL and which are the operating system they would be compatible with. I am currently using Oracle 10g and Discoverer 9i on Windows XP. For SQL I tried to install SQL 2005 Enterprise Version on Windows XP but failed.
Any advice will be very helpful.
Thanks

According to this resource, you can't install Enterprise Edition on XP:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.90).aspx
You can however install developer edition (the same as enterprise, but for development purposes) or Express Edition (free light-weight version of SQL Server).
For learning purposes, I would recommend the Express edition.

ORACLE & Microsoft SQL Server are certianly two different platforms, specificaly rivals 😛 (jk).
Everyone can direct you on specific database system. Both are user-friendly, both are easy to learn. I would ask you to go for both.
See thats what... you got confused. Basically you need to make a choice between the 2 paths. Both paths will help you to reach your dreams.
But given a choice I would recommend for SQL Server, as I have been working since 5 years and ther is lot to learn....journey never ends here
Best of luck...

Thanks for the info Koen. I shall down the express edition of sql right away.
So if Sql and Oracle are rival platforms, can I install both on the same machine? Since I already have Oracle installed on my computer.

I see no reason why you can't install both on the same machine.
Internet Explorer and Firefox are also rivals, but you can use them at the same time (although they battle over the default browser option :-))

Thanks Koen, just one more question. I have downloaded SQL Server express edition. Now, I am also downloading SQL server 2005 express edition tool kit with management studio. It says I first need to install MSXML 6.0 for management studio. When I went to download MSXML 6.0 it says "download the files most appropriate for you". Here is the link:
and the options are:
msxml6.msi 1.5MB
msxml6_ia64.msi 3.6MB
msxml6_SDK.msi 4.4MB
msxml6_x64.msi 2.6MB
Can u please tell me which ones to download and install?
Thanks a lot for your time.

X64 is for 64-bit machines, ia64 is for machines with Intel Itanium 64-bit processors, SDK is the software development kit.
So I would take the first one, unless you have a 64-bit machine.
