I'm just doing an installation from MSDN, but from someone's perspective who has not touched OLAP in 7 years, I think Central Management is supposed to be the largest difference.

Also, I think backup compression is available in R2 standard, but only in RTM/SP's enterprise. That is a big selling point.

Few of the features that i know
1.SQL Server 2008 R2 will have editions that support up to 256 logical processors, an increase from the maximum support of 64 logical processors with past releases.
2.Master Data Services(MDS) part of BI solutions, people say it is introduced avoid data conflicts in DW, not sure how to implement it.
3.One more new feature in BI is Power Pivot, PowerPivot is designed to meet the more focused BI needs of end users through integration with Microsoft Excel and SharePoint.
4.SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS): adds to previous geospatial data types by offering new visualization mapping capabilities for reports.
5.SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS): new dashboards to DBAs for monitoring and managing multiple instances of SQL Servers from a single screen, this functionality is not available in SQL Server express edition.

A new feature of the core DBMS is Data Tier Applications (DACs). Also the Express size limitation has been increased to 10GB.

I think you didn't read the replies very well. A number of features were mentioned that are new to R2. Here's another link:

I think that David's and Wayne's links are good places to start. Is there something you were using this for? Is there some business reason?
I see R2 as what it is, a 10.5 version of SQL 2008. There are improvements in areas, and new features, but in general, unless you specifically are using one of those, I'd skip the upgrade.

thanks..got it now..

I think that major difference is the size of database support from my point of view and I also think that SQL Server 2008 R2 does not work in XP Home systems.
The largest database supported by SQL Server Express has been increased from 4 GB to 10 GB.

Overview of New Features in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 introduces lot many new features for Business Intelligence users, Developers and Database Administrators. This article gives you an overview of some of the new features in SQL Server 2008 R2.
Capitalize on Hardware Innovation
There was always a demand from customers to increase the number of logical processors supported in SQL Server. In SQL Server 2008 R2 the number of logical processors supported has been increased from 64 to 256 and it will take advantage of the multi-core technology. This will help improve performance and scalability for very large data warehousing applications.
Optimize Hardware Resources
This is a great new feature for database administrators as it will provide a real time insight into Server Utilization, Policy Violations etc. This feature will help organizations to strictly apply organization wide policies across servers thereby helping them maintain a healthy system.
Manage Efficiently at Scale
This feature will help database administrator to gain insight into growing applications and databases thereby helping them to ensure better management of database servers.
Enhance Collaboration Across Development and IT
Database Application development will be more closely integrated with Visual Studio 2010 which will help to ensure higher quality during the application development along with easier deployments and better handling of changes over time.
Master Data Services (MDS)
A Master Data Service (MDS) is a kind of data service that is responsible for: managing, in a single place, the uniqueness, integrity, quality, and interrelationships between the data that matters the most. This will improve the quality of your data because of centralized approach of defining; deploying and managing master data thereby ensure reporting consistency across systems.
Build Robust Analytical Applications
Using Microsoft Office Excel 2010 you can build robust analytical applications which will allow in-memory, column oriented processing engine to allow users to interactively explore and perform complex calculations on millions of data at lightening speeds. Using Microsoft Excel 2010 you can easily integrate data from multiple sources such as corporate databases, spreadsheets and external data sources.
Share and Collaborate with Confidence
Using Microsoft Office SharePoint 2010 users can easily publish reports to SharePoint sites thereby making it available across the organizations. The other advantage is that the reports can be refreshed automatically and you can also maintain version controlling and tracking using SharePoint. Once you start using Microsoft Office SharePoint the SharePoint Administrators will have the ability to set server policies and monitor them more effectively thereby securing the business critical information.
Support for Geospatial Visualization
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 will provide support for geospatial visualization including mapping, routing, and custom shapes. It will also support SQL Spatial and will also provide integration with Microsoft Virtual Earth tiles.

SQL 2008 R2 release was almost all about either extreme scale stuff or BI stuff. Not much at all for us relational engine types. 🙁

About SQL Server 2008
By using SQL Server you will be able to manage the database seamlessly. This system was designed to make work much easier because the organization of information will be done automatically. It doesn’t matter if the data is structured or semi-structured because this server can store all kinds of information – print, media, digital and so on. It makes a perfect backup storage for your information and can perform various functions that meet your needs, such as search, analysis, sharing, etc., across all the formats that you have stored.
With this server you can use the Filestream data type to reference any file that you have stored on the system. It also has Full Text Search, which makes it very easy to manage and improve the server’s performance.
About SQL Server 2008 R2
This server was released in 2010 and has all the features of the regular 2008 version, but it has added features that make it much better than its predecessor. It has a Master Data Service, which is a server that manages many features such as all the different entities and hierarchies. It also features Power Pivot for Excel and Share Point and Report Builder 3.0. It has many more visual features and has a high level of support for a new system on the market.
