How do I remove groups on a SQL Server 2 instance cluster?

  • I have a two node cluster. I tried to do a failover to node2, the failover didn’t work. I now need to remove the group. Here is what I currently have: SQLCLUSTERTEST>Cluster Group>SQLCluster Test1 and SQL Cluster Test2. Which group(s) should be removed and how do I go about removing it/them?

    Thanks,

    RonKin

  • Do you want to remove the group just because it didn't fail-over or is the error on why it failed leading you to something?

What OS version are you running?

  • I need to remove the groups because of the messgae I receive; Virtual Server name already exists on the network. To proceed, enter a unique Virtual Server name. I am unable to enter a unique virtual Server NameSQL Server 2005 Ent x64), because it has been setup as a test cluster. The OS is MS Windows 2003 R2 Ent. x64. This is the reason that I need to remove Groups SQLTest1 and SQLTest2.

    Thanks,

    RonKin

  • I also need to know how to remove SQLTest1 and SQLTest2 from the SQLTESTCLUSTER.

    Thanks,

    RonKin

  • If this is a test setup I would probably just start over, unless something dictates otherwise I prefer to start clean instead of bandaiding something (especially if it is just a test environment).

  • Thanks. I know I need to start from the beginning but how do I get rid of the SQLTEST1 and SQLTEST2 groups plus the server names within the cluster? For example: CLuster Administrator>SQLCLUTest(remove)>SQLTest1 (remove) and SQLTest2 (remove).

    Thank you,

    RonKin

This has instruction on cleaning up a cluster service, basically removing the node from the cluster.

To remove the groups you will need to take the node offline and then I believe it allows you to delete it.

Thank you Shawn for staying with me and helping me out.

No problem. I don't mess with cluster admin much, I'm usually involved after the OS side is setup. So I don't know how far I will be able to take you :-D.

  • One more question then I will be done. I am currently looking in the registry under HKey_LOCAL_Machine>Groups>NodeName = SQLTEST1, can I delete the node name?

    Thanks,

    RonKin

  • I can't advise you to do it;-), but I have had to go through and delete the existance of the node name in the registry so it would let me use it again, so far I have had no issue with it. I however can't recall what keys I actually deleted.:w00t:
