Difference between SP_UPDATESTATS and UPDATESTATISTICS maintenance plan task?

  Hi,

  We have a 30 GB database in SQL Server 2008 SP1. When I ran the SP_UPDATESTATS for this database, it took 17 mins to complete and I then ran UPDATESTATISTICS maintenance plan task and it took 1 hr 45 mins to update the stats.

  So what is diffrence between SP_UPDATESTATS and UPDATESTATISTICS maintenance plan task? Are they do different job?

  SP_UPDATESTATS only updates the statistics where it thinks it needs to.
