Database Layout/Server Documentation

  • I am trying to document our existing database infrastructure layout, environment wise.

    That is Prod/rep/dev.

I was wondering what should be a proper template for it.

    The template I got is

    Database Lay out

    •Server Name

    •OS

    •RAM/PROCESSOR

    •DBMS

    •Type

    •DBs associated (Ex: Employees, Finance)

    Applications

    •Application1

    •Application2

    •Blah blah

    Disaster Recovery Mechanism

    •Mirroring

    oIncluded DBS

    oMirrored Server

    oType of mirroring

    •Replication

    oIncluded DBS

    oPublisher Details

    oSubscriber details

    Backup Plans

    •FULL – frequency

    •Difrn- Freequency

    •Tx Log – Frequency

    •Off site – Freequency

I am planning to follow such a template for Production, Development and Reporting Environments. Please let me know if I included something which is not necessary, and if I forgot anything that needs to be here. Any other suggestions or online references are more than welcome. Thanks for taking your time to read this.

  • See if you wish to consider for:

    - version and patch level details for OS and SQLServer

    - data and logfile locations

    - Key backup recover schedules, backup locations and backup device specs (logical definition I meant)

    - server / database level users and their permission levels

    - list of (OS) account groups on your server and their permission levels

    - NICs their specifications, IP-Subnet related information (just in case)

    - key account IDs used for SQLServer, SQLServer Agent, Publisher-Subscriber etc

    - If you have filesystem level mirroring in progress, its worth taking note of what goes where

    - If you have clustered nodes, take a full note of whats shared, from where, and details of Clustered Groups
