Start your ignition to Production

  • Hi all,

Before going for a live data base what are the things we need to consider and steps should be taken as a vibrant intuitive DBA?

On memory utilization, space, Performance tuning, storage mechanism, pagination etc...

Any hints in general, links to articles or white papers are welcome.

    Thanks,

    Ami

  • That is a huge topic. You're not likely to get really useful responses in a forum like this. The configuration you need to put on your system is very dependent on the system itself. For example, you're going to haven entirely different memory settings for a 32 bit machine than for a 64 bit machine. My recommendation would be to get a couple of books like Kalen Delaney's SQL Server 2008 Internals or Brent Ozar, et al, SQL Server 2008 Internals and Troubleshooting. They're going to give you a lot more options, broken down and explained, so that you can apply the unique situation that you're faced with, as opposed to going through some checklist that may not apply to your server.

If you're really just getting started as a DBA, then you might want to get a copy of Brad McGehee's How to Become an Exceptional DBA. Great starter. Also, I wrote a few chapters for an introductory book, Beginning SQL Server Administration. It's specifically geared towards people just getting their start.

    Thanks, Grant Fritchey!

hope i didn't mean anything wrong....

I was asking for some links / white papers where i can shape my knowledge or from where I can start...

I know that there is no definite way to achieve this and this comes purely by experience.

    Thanks,

    Regards,

No, you didn't say anything wrong, I'm sorry if my response implied it.

You're just going to have a tough time getting much, on this topic, out of forum posts. I strongly recommend Kalen's book. That'll teach more than just about anything. Once you've got the big picture nailed down, some of the white papers & stuff available out there will make a lot more sense.

  • Hi Grant Fritchey,

I didn't mean it. I need a starting point(that why i mention ignition). I take your suggestion. Let me go through Kalen's book.

    Thanks a lot,

    Regards,

    Ami
