March 13, 2010: PSSUG SQL Camp, pre-Call For Speakers

  • This is a pre-announcement of an event that I am helping to plan and run:
On Saturday, March 13th, PSSUG1, (a PASS Chapter SQL User's Group) will hold its first SQL Camp2 at St Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA.
As a member of the Speaker's Committee, my job is to help with speaker acquisitions. As we are hoping to have 25-35 speakers, I wanted to make all who are interested aware of the date so that they can plan accordingly. It is my hope that one or more of my Fellow Experts3 here at SSC will either be in the area or so moved by altruism that they offer to bring their awesome SQL speaking skills to bear for our benefit4. 🙂

I should have a website up soon where those interested in speaking can submit proposals/applications. Until then, if you have an interest and/or may be available for us, please Email me at Rbarryyoung+pssugcamp@Gmail.com, including and speeches, presentations, or topics that you would be interested in presenting.

1 - Philadelphia SQL Server Users Group

2 - Name not actually determined yet

    3 - 😀

4 - No remuneration for speakers is available at this time, however, I may be able to offer one or more of the following: Lunch, dinner, party, alcohol, a bed, taxi service, etc.

  • Have you considered doing it as a SQLSaturday. All the tools are available: website, messaging, some sponsor contacts. And, you get some coaching from people who have done a few.

We considered it, but I was told that since we were getting support from PASS, we couldn't use a proprietary name/program like SQLSaturday.

  • Interesting. You might want to check back with them on that. I believe that PASS has warmed a bit to SQLSaturday. I know that PASS doesn't supply the tools like SQLSaturday does and they did sponsor our Orlando SQLSaturday financially.

I asked several times and supposedly they checked with PASS HQ and that was the word that they got. If you know any different, Jack, please let me know who I can talk to about it.

  • Barry, while I wouldn't be available to speak, I am very interested in attending the event. When the site gets up and you start taking reservations please let me know.

    Thanks,

  • Who are dealing with at PASS? I know Andy Warren (Lead for SQLSaturday and on the PASS BoD) well so I have an in there. I was also one of the leads for SQLSaturday #21 - Orlando so I know that PASS sent us some money as a sponsor. Also, according to the PASS board of director panel discussion at the Summit, President-Elect Rushabh Mehta, said PASS wants to partner with SQLSaturday and supports community events like it.

I think your issue is that you talked to PASS first so they are pushing a bit. What kind of support are you getting from them?

  • I can tell you that PASS now supports non-PASS branded events. The person to talk to at HQ is Blythe Morrow, she's the community coordinator. There's been discussion around this recently at the Board level and we decided that it was important to help out the SQL Server community regardless of event branding.

If you need any assistance, let me know and I'll see what I can do. I'm technically not on the board until January, but I'm more than willing to help out however I can.

It's not me, Jack, it's the local co-Chairs who dealt with the PASS folks. So I need specific information/contacts to give to them so that they can resolve it.

Thanks, Jeremiah. I will forward all of this information to them and see if they can re-open the issuew with the PASS sponsors.

  • Definitely Blythe should be the first contact, blythe.morrow@sqlpass.org. I just assumed you were the one who had talked to the office and had someone you were dealing with already.

  • Yup, turns out you (and actually me too!) were 100% correct, and in fact one of the co-chairs worked it all out at PASS, I just never got the word. I'll post the links for our Philadelphia SQL Saturday Event as soon as I get the chance.

    🙂

  • Cool. Merry Christmas.

I wish I could come to the event, but that ain't happening.

  • Barry, I'd love to come, but the timing doesn't work for me. I'll look forward to seeing one in 2011, and I'll try to come out.
