Resource type showing as unknown

  • Hi,

We have SQL Server 2008 on 2 node active/passive cluster set up Windows 2008 server.

In Failover Cluster Manager, When I select Services and Applications, on right pane display as below:

    Name Status Type Current Owner

    MSDTC online DTC SQL1

    SQLGroup1 online UNKNOWN SQL1

Could you please advice me why the 'Type' is showing as UNKNOWN for SQL Group1?

It should show the 'Type' as SQL Server right? (In Windows 2003, the Type is used to show as SQL Server)

Where can I change the Type as SQL Server? Please see the attachment

    Thanks

  • For me also the SQLGroup in Failover Cluster Management shows the TYPE as Unknown even though everything is running fine on a 2 node a/p cluster on Windows Server 2008.

Do we have an option to change this resoureces type as SQL Server or it has to be Unknown?

    Thanks

  • I'm pretty sure this happens because you created the cluster group first without any application in it, i.e. just an empty group, and then installed SQL onto it and pointed it here. That property was set when the group was created, and since there was nothing in it, it shows up as Unknown or Other.

No, I did NOT create the the SQLGroup prior to install SQL Server 2008.

I let allowed the SQL Server set up to create the Failover Group. i.e I have entered manually the resource group name in SQL Server Setup.

    Please advice

  • Hi Derric,

I'm also allowed the SQL Server set up to create the Failover Group. But still the Resource Type shows as Unknown:hehe:

    Please advice

  • Unless it's causing an issue, I wouldn't worry about it. As far as I know it's just a label. I checked a few of my clusters and they all show Other.

Thank you. It's NOT causing an issue. But if we can able to change the resource type as SQL Server, then I want to do that!

  • I have the same issue - was just wondering if anyone found a solution to this? No doubt managers and other people are going to ask why it says 'other' when it should say 'SQL Server'.
