Error when copying backup files

  • I'm trying to copy backup files onto a new external hard drive. I can copy most of them just fine, but 4 of the databases' backup files give me the following error:

"Cannot copy <file name>: parameter is incorrect."

I've tried rebooting the destination machine to no avail. We have a daily backup job that runs every night and processes the files all the same. All the file names are correct and have the .bak extension and Windows knows they're bak files. I have never had this error pop up when copying the back up files.

I get the error whether I copy & paste or click & drag.

Any idea why I'm getting this only on a few of the backup files?

  • Nevermind. I found out that because it's a FAT32 format, the largest files it can have are 4 GB, which the bak files that I'm having problems on are all well over 4 GB each.

  • then how did you resolve it ? compression or zip ?

I work only to learn Sql Server...though my company pays me for getting their stuff done;-)

  • That must be a pretty small external drive if it's formatted as FAT32! Is there any particular reason you can't reformat it as NTFS?
