What to backup on witness ?

  • Hello,

We are setting mirroring and I would like to know what I have to backup on the witness instance.

We use two sql server 2008 instance and a witness on a SQL Server 2008 express. All three in 64 bits.

I think it's only necessary to backup master database after each new database mirroring setup but can anybody confirm that ?

    Thanks a lot.

  • Regardless, you would be well advised to backup all system databases as a set. If you ever had to restore you would certainly want MSDB and Master to be in sync and all databases to be the same collation!

  • My advise would be don't bother backing up the witness.

If something ever happened to the witness, it is much quicker and easier to asign a new witness instance and just alter the settings in Database Properties --> Mirroring window pane.

There is nothing important on the witness instance.

  • OK thanks a lot.
