Is the error happening when you connect with a SQL login, windows authentication, or both?
If the SQL login works and the windows authentication doesn't you can try enabling named pipes (if allowed) and see if it makes a difference.

SPNs and Kerberos... the HOST SPN might be wrong...
Is it a new install of SQL?
Are you using delegated security?

Mostly it is SPN Issue only
