Database Administrator vs. Database Engineer

  • Hi everyone!

In the company I am working we use "Database Administrator" as our job title. Now my boss is thinking of changing this to "Database Engineer". He asked for my opinion but I am not sure about the difference between these job titles if there are any... I tried to find some specifications about both job titles but haven't found any real useful information. The more common job title of course is the DBA. My question now is if one of you can help me and know some specifications/ differences between these job titles?

Thanks a lot and kind regards!

  • Depends completely on the company. There's no industry-standard definition of titles. The boss can make your titles whatever he (or you) likes, the important thing is what your job responsibilities (as defined by the boss) are.

  • I know a DBA who's title is "Director of information systems". Fancy but doesnt mean anything to me.

As GilaMonster said its your responsiblities that matter!

  • Thanks for your answers! I think I'll let my Boss do the decision and don't really care of it 😉
